New smoke-resistant Trovidur® EC Clad LS fulfils cutting-edge safety criteria

More safety in public buildings: Wall claddings made of Trovidur® EC Clad LS provide more safety in the event of fire due to the reduced smoke development.

The demands placed on materials used in safety-relevant applications are increasing steadily. Horrible incidents are often the trigger for stricter requirements. Fire safety in particular is often the focus. With Trovidur® EC Clad LS, Röchling now offers a further development of the proven wall cladding material Trovidur® EC Clad. In addition to its excellent fire properties, Trovidur® EC Clad LS impresses with reduced smoke development and fulfils the requirements according to EN 13501 for classification B s2 d0.

Fire protection is a fundamental criterion for safety in the construction industry – building fires are unfortunately a horrible recurring scenario that often cost lives. If fire breaks out, its spread must be slowed as much as possible in order to ensure that there is plenty of time to leave the building. It is rare that fire victims succumb to burns, however. It is above all the smoke that presents a serious danger to people in the event of fire. In addition to fire safety concepts, escape routes and evacuation plans, the building materials used play an important role: depending on how quickly they catch on fire and burn, how much and what type of smoke they develop, and whether they are dripping, they can seriously impede escape from the fire. Materials therefore have to meet high requirements for flammability and smoke development.

EN 13501

There are numerous national fire safety provisions for construction materials in Europe that vary with respect to testing criteria, procedures and classifications. In order to harmonise all of these different regulations, the European Union created a European framework with EN 13501 that aims at a unified "classification of construction products and types of construction according to their fire behaviour." Unlike some national fire safety regulations, such as DIN 4102, which is still parallel valid in Germany, EN 13501 contains a more detailed classification. In addition to the actual behaviour of fire, the development of smoke and dripping burning material are also taken into consideration.

EN 13501 divides construction materials into six fire classes, A through F. "A" stands for non-flammable materials, "B" for flame-resistant materials, "D" and "E" indicate normally flammable materials, and "F" contains all unclassified materials. The development of smoke is represented by classification s1 (no/low smoke development) through s3 (high smoke development). There is also a classification for dripping behaviour of d0 (no dripping) to d3 (heavily burning dripping).

Wall cladding made from Trovidur® EC Clad LS

This move towards increased and better-coordinated safety in the construction industry has prompted Röchling to further develop its proven wall cladding material Trovidur® EC Clad. In addition to the material's excellent fire properties, the development of smoke was further reduced. The material fulfils the requirements for classification B s2 d0 in accordance with EN 13501.
