Optimal processing methods for SCR Tank Systems

SCR filling system in bullet shot injection technology

SCR tank made via injection molding

When it comes to process technology, Röchling Automotive feels right at home. Along with years of experience in material development, the expertise in combining various processing methods also come in handy in this segment. In this way, composite systems and components can be individually adapted to the constantly increasing requirements – for example, in terms of their temperature resistance and the tight spaces in vehicles.

Filling System – PIT Style

As a longtime specialist in the field of fluid dynamics, Röchling Automotive brings its skills to the various technologies in the area of exhaust-gas cleaning for diesel engines via the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) method. The system needed for filling the SCR tanks has been produced for the first time with the help of bullet shot injection technology (PIT) and heat element welding. The filling and venting ducts have different diameters, yet are manufactured simultaneously in one process step. “In this way we achieve constant minimum diameters and wall thicknesses, which in turn minimize weight and pressure drops while providing utmost material flexibility,” explains Walter Kral, Head of the Fluid Components and Systems product line.

Injection-Molded SCR Tank

Röchling Automotive isn’t just known for its expertise in filling systems, but also for its comprehensive knowledge of SCR. An injection molding technique is used to manufacture the SCR tanks. The combination of its skills in injection molding and expansion tank development initially helped Röchling Automotive enter the SCR tank business. Röchling’s work helps automotive manufacturers meet the Euro 6 norm in terms of CO2 emissions. Its ability to integrate multiple add-on parts into one whole is
also a key skill. The injection molded tank optimally uses the installation space and boasts improved quality thanks to its precise structural form. No weld lines, which can break, and additional integrated comfort: anti-splash ridges prevent annoying sloshing noises. Moreover, the SCR tank is incred-
ibly light. A 30-liter SCR tank saves 0.8 kilograms of weight.

“Since the installation space in a vehicle is constantly changing, we are developing flexible solutions that offer many adaption possibilities,” says Ludwig Huber, General Manager Innovation and Business Development. It takes the combination of all of these technologies to provide customers with the greatest benefit.
