Cryogenic insulation for LNG fuel tanks

Manufactured in the maritime town of Haren for reliable ships

Shipping companies and naval architects are faced with a challenge: following the entry into force in 2015 of the emissions regulations of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for ECAs (Emission Controlled Areas) such as the North Sea and Baltic Sea, ships must in future be equipped with a low-emissions propulsion, such as a modern and environmentally friendly LNG engines.

Shipping companies must modify their existing fleets and design new ships so that they meet the new requirements. Two points are of particular importance: firstly, modification of the ships must be completed rapidly if laid-up times and loss of revenue are to be minimised. Secondly, the new LNG engines must be both reliable and powerful. That means naval architects need a lot of know-how for the design – and the right materials. We can help in this task with cryogenic insulation made from Lignostone® cryogenic laminated densified wood.

For reliable LNG engines: our Lignostone® cryogenic laminated densified wood permanently insulates the LNG fuel tank of LNG engines from the ship`s structure, enhancing the reliability and long life of your ship's propulsion system.

LNG engines need an LNG fuel tank in which the liquefied natural gas is stored at -164 °C. This LNG fuel tank must be reliably insulated from the ship's structure.

Under the brand name Lignostone® cryogenic, Röchling offers a laminated densified wood impregnated with special resins and consisting of red beech veneers (Fagus sylvatica) that are bonded under pressure and heat. This produces a unique character profile that makes it ideal for the thermal insulation of LNG:

  • Low thermal conductivity
  • High mechanical strength
  • Low coefficient of slide friction
  • Outstanding temperature resistance: -196 °C to +90 °C
  • High wear and abrasion resistance
  • Low specific weight

Your advantages

Lignostone® cryogenic:

Proven in shipping across the world

Lignostone® has been used in international shipping for decades to provide cryogenic insulation in LNG and LPG tankers with volumes of up to 180,000 m³. The laminated densified wood insulates the large-dimensioned LNG and LPG tanks from the ship's hull and is approved by many leading companies. Approved quality

Lignostone® is approved by the following, among others:

LNG insulation customised for your application

Depending on the design of the ship and where the LNG engines are installed, the cryogenic insulation needs to have very different dimensions and geometries. We would be happy to manufacture your cryogenic insulation made from Lignostone® cryogenic to your specifications within narrow tolerances in dimensions of 6 to 3,500 mm on our modern CNC systems.

Products

Lignostone® cryogenic insulation can be customised for your application, such as:

Expertise from the maritime town of Haren

Our Lignostone® cryogenic insulation is manufactured at our site in Haren, Germany – known throughout the world as a maritime town. This is the location from which Lignostone® has been launched onto the world's oceans for decades.

Sustainability

We use only selected red beech veneers of the very highest quality for Lignostone®. Obtained from the trees that are only found in Europe, the rotary-cut veneers are subject to the strictest quality controls and come from sustainable forestry.
